A major storm system brought near-blizzard conditions to western Michigan Wednesday through late Thursday night. In our area, the areas most greatly affected were Berrien, Cass and St. Joseph counties in southern Michigan. A Winter Storm Warning was issued for these areas. Strong winds blew heavy snow to the point where visibilities were less than one quarter of a mile and white-outs at times. Snow developed over the area late Sunday night into early Monday morning, causing hazardous snowfall amounts. A Winter Weather Advisory was issued in good judgment in the northern portion of the area. However, an unexpected 6-9" of snow accumulated in Hillsdale and Branch counties in Michigan. These amounts are considered warning criteria, but forecast models did not have good agreement with this result.

A band of heavy lake effect snow formed on Tuesday night [February 3] over Lake Michigan, affecting parts of northwest Indiana and extreme southwest lower Michigan. The visible satellite image below shows how the single band extended along the length of Lake Michigan in contrast to the multiple bands over Lake Superior and Lake Huron.
