EF3 Tornado -- Nappanee, IN: Oct. 18, 2007

A strong EF3 tornado ripped through portions of Marshall, Kosciusko, and Elkhart counties just after 10pm on October 18, 2007. The situation was considered "extremely dangerous and life-threatening" by the National Weather Service. This severity lead to the issuance of a rare "Tornado Emergency," never issued by the NWS Office in Northern Indiana ever before this time. Lake Effect Rain: Aug. 22-23, 2009

While the Great Lakes have a profound effect on the weather across the region year-round, when "lake effect" is heard one is almost assured to think of snow. Lake effect showers in the form of rain often occur in the autumn when the first large, cool air masses spill southeast out of central Canada across the Great Lakes. However, lake effect rain showers in August are a very rare event.

Straight-Line Wind Damage: Aug. 19, 2009

A line of severe thunderstorms made its way northeast from Illinois Wednesday night into northern Indiana. While in Indiana, the storms lost most of their strength. However, some areas of the line continued to produce severe wind, generally from Logansport, IN to Huntington, IN. Wind damage has been reported in southwest Michigan, as well. Some damage not associated with a thunderstorm has been reported in Steuben County, IN.
